Sports Vision

Even if you have perfect vision, a visit to an eye doctor (optometrist or ophthalmologist) who specializes in helping both amateur and professional athletes achieve their best performance may be right for you! Attaining great sports vision is dependent upon a number of issues: do you normally wear prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, what type of sport do you participate in and to what level, what type of eye protection do you need when participating in your sport or activity? Depending on your answers to these questions, you may consider the following options.

Sports Perscription

Contact Lenses

If you normally wear prescription eye glasses, you may want to consider either soft or gas permeable contact lenses. When you wear glasses during athletics, they offer only a narrow field of vision. They may also shift slightly with each move. Glasses also have a tendency to get splattered with rain or mud, fog up or even get broken during contact. Conversely, contact lenses offer an unlimited field of vision and, of course, cannot get wet, fogged up or broken during play. For those athletes who may not be inclined to keep their lenses as clean as they should, daily-wear, disposable contact lenses are readily available. Wear them for the day and toss them away each night! Even if you do not wish to wear contacts for daily use, you may wish to consider wearing them for better sports vision. This is much more possible with soft lenses than with gas permeable lenses that require much more “breaking-in” time.

Eye Glasses

Your eye doctor may also prescribe special versions of your normal prescription just for sports. These lenses may be larger than your normal glasses to increase your field of vision, tinted to eliminate glare and optimize vision or be made of virtually unbreakable materials to prevent potentially dangerous breakage.

Laser Refractive Eye Surgery

Perhaps the optimal choice for sports vision enhancement is laser eye surgery such as LASIK, LASEK and PRK. These fairly simple and low-risk procedures can give you enhanced vision to provide superior vision to allow you to be the best athlete you can be!
