What is Computer Vision?

Computer vision, also known as CV, can result in blurred vision, eye strain and eye fatigue. These symptoms can, ultimately, lead to a reduction of productivity in the workplace.

Who is at Risk for Computer Vision?

For people under the age of about 40, blurred vision may be due to the inability of your eyes to remain accurately focused on your computer screen for an extended time period. Eye fatigue and blurriness may also be related to problems with rapidly and precisely changing focus, like when you move your eyes from your monitor to your keyboard and back to your monitor.

If, conversely, you are older than 60, the problem may be due to presbyopia, the normal age-related loss of the ability to focus on near objects. This can also lead to computer vision.

Relieving Computer Vision Symptoms

Relieving the symptoms of CV may be as simple as visiting your eye doctor and getting fit for a special pair of glasses designed specifically to relieve those annoying symptoms. Since most users position their computer screens about 20-26 inches from their eyes, glasses that correct either close or far vision will not optimally cover this middle distance. However, specially-made glasses will cover this median distance and help to relieve eye strain. Due to the specific vision correction of these glasses, they should not be worn while driving or doing other potentially hazardous work.

Types of glasses that relieve computer vision symptoms are:

• Single vision lenses – these are the simplest type of computer vision corrective eyeglasses. They provide the largest field of view, reducing eye fatigue and eye strain as well as the back and shoulder pain that can accompany these unpleasant symptoms.
• Occupational progressive lenses – these are often prescribed for sufferers of presbyopia. They correct close and far vision as well as provide a larger mid-field correction that is perfect for computer work.
• Lined trifocals – This is similar to the above but with a even larger mid-field correction area. • Occupational bifocals - These have the top portion for computer work and the lower portion for reading.
• Clip-ons – These correction lenses are available as clip-ons that can be attached to your regular glasses.

In addition, due to the harsh light in most offices and the light emitted from computer screens, you can order computer vision glasses that are coated to reduce glare while relaxing the eyes and helping them focus. Anti-reflective coating can be applied to either clear glass, for your regular prescription or to accommodate one of the above computer vision prescriptions. Reducing eye strain can even play a major role in how you sit while working at your computer. Correct posture also leads to more productivity and less fatigue.

According to some researchers, productivity increases greatly when computer workers get the correct computer vision glasses, not to mention decreased stress and fatigue for the employees!
