LASIK Surgeons
Physicians who perform LASIK and other forms of laser refractive surgeries are known as ophthalmologists; they are MDs. Although most, if not all, ophthalmologists perform these procedures, some have received more training and have more experience than others. You should definitely get a referral from your primary care physician or optometrist (a non-MD eye doctor) for a LASIK surgeon in your area. Although performing LASIK, LASEK and PRK are not as difficult as open-heart surgeries, it is still surgery and requires specialized training, experience and skill.
Although there are dozens of ads for LASIK eye surgery centers across the United States that offer excellent care and phenomenally low prices, remember that these are ads. It is much smarter to get an informed referral from another heath care practitioner than from the TV or radio (even if it is Tiger Woods doing the ad). It may also be smart to choose an eye surgeon who is associated with a major medical center or a center that is known for advanced technology. It is also a good idea to choose a LASIK surgeon who is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Your Consultation with a LASIK Surgeon
When you have decided on a surgeon (or think you have), it is time to schedule your initial consultation. He or she should perform a thorough eye exam and ask questions about your general health. If it is decided that you are a good candidate for LASIK, LASEK or PRK, it is time for you to ask the questions. Here are just a few questions (and answers) to get you started:
• Q. How long have you been performing refractive surgical procedures? A. Should be at least three years.
• Q. How many procedures have you performed? A. Should not be fewer than 500.
• Q. What percentage of your refractive surgery patients achieves visual acuity of at least 20/40? A. The average is about 90% - be leery of numbers much higher or lower.
• Q. What percentage of your refractive surgery patients achieves visual acuity of at least 20/20? A. About 65% is the average.
You should choose a surgeon who is experienced with several procedures; LASIK, PRK, LASEK, CK and clear lens replacement are all types of surgery that can greatly improve one’s vision. Your doctor should be proficient in all of these techniques so he or she can knowledgeably choose the best one to correct your particular vision problem. You should also follow your own instincts; if you are not comfortable with the doctor or the staff, get another recommendation and schedule another consultation. Remember, it’s your eyes.
